This is the eighth installment in the Chronicles of Elantra, which is pretty long for a fantasy series. I'll admit I'm getting impatient for some resolution of some of the basic questions, like what is the nature of the magic granted to Kaylin by the runes covering Kaylin's body like tattoos, and why is Kaylin the only one in the land subject to that magic. Because of that impatience I almost skipped this installment and the last one, but each time West pulled me make in with unexpected and creative turns in the development of the story. This is a very rich and complex universe and the reader (at least this reader) can't predict what's going to happen next. But the characters are varied and intriguing so I keep coming back for more.
