This is a novella prequel to the Chronicles of Elantra. It covers Kaylin's first few days with the Hawks after she arrives in Elantra at age thirteen, after attempting to assassinate the Hawklord. The plot is fast-paced and engrossing, as usual. However, I'm not a big fan of short fiction. Since I've read most of the series before this one, I didn't miss the lack of background and character development. I was familiar with most of the supporting characters who are Kaylin's Hawk comrades. But I was left with very little sense of who the bad guy(s) really were. And Kaylin's rescue of the girl seemed rather convenient and not well justified. But it was a very enjoyable read, despite those small problems.
